Anyone have any trust exercises ideas that doesnt involve a lunging whip ?/?

Well what I did to gain my geldings trust was to speak to him, groom him, touch him allover in his paddock. He also does not like a lunge whip, so what I do is use my voice, when I lunge him. He responds very well to it,better than he does when a professional trainer uses a whip and her voice, and our bond is growing stronger. Other thing that could work is that u must just sit a read a story outload to her.
